Intrinsic factor

A chemical substance produced by the gastric mucosa (stomach) which is necessary for intestinal absorption of vitamin B12 . A deficiency in intrinsic factor can cause pernicious anemia . Deficiencies in intrinsic factor can be caused by surgical removal of the stomach or diseases that cause the gastric mucosa to shrink.
